I love how food and drink can bring people together– across cultures, across differences, across tables. My mother, Aurora, was the matriarch of our family and she was able to do this for us and her friends. She loved cooking and I have many memories of sitting around the table talking, laughing, and eating her delicious food! So now, here I am working to create ways to help bring people together to enjoy delicious food and drink and to share our culture with you so that you can create memories that last a lifetime.

Our mission is to cultivate ties between cultures and people through the uniqueness of our products, which are made with the freshest ingredients and infused with the taste of flavors from around the world.

Meet Reyna Orellana Masko

Founder of Aurora International Foods

After immigrating from El Salvador, we made our life in Houston, Texas where I learned about the power of food. I now call Michigan home where I volunteer in my community; and when I reflect on all of the work I’ve done, it’s all centered on bringing people together, being inclusive, and making space for people to share their cultures and celebrate their identities.

My family and I enjoying traveling, good food and delicious drinks, and communing with good friends and family.

Aurora International Foods is a vessel for sharing my passion for bringing people together and sharing my culture.

History of the Michelada

There are two stories that help give insight to the beginnings of this refreshing drink.

Origin Story One

General August Michel's Drink

It has been said that a general from the Mexican army would regularly order a beer with lime and hot sauce for him and his soldiers after the battle.
According to this story, the michelada got its name by combining the general’s name, August Michel, with the Mexican slang term “chelada” for beer. Combining these, you get “michelada” and the essential recipe for the drink.

Origin Story Two

Spanish Translation

It’s also possible that the name comes from a combination of the Spanish words mi (my), chelada (beer), and helada (frozen, ice-cold), giving us the name “michelada,” roughly meaning “my cold beer.”
